Ministry Staff at Grace Lutheran Church
Pastor Edward P. Skutshek
Pastor Skutshek has served as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church since June 1st, 2000. He was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, in 1956. He was baptized at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Winnipeg, Manitoba, that same year. His family was active in church life. They moved to Kelowna in 1968. They became members at Christ Lutheran Church in Kelowna, BC, where Pastor Ed was confirmed in 1970. He graduated from George Pringle Senior Secondary School in 1974. Ed graduated with a BA from Simon Frazer University, Burnaby BC in 1979 with a major in Psychology.
He graduated from Western State University College of Law in San Diego, California, USA in 1983. He practiced law in California for some 13 _ years. Ed met and married his wife Denise (nee Hughes) in 1984. Their one and only son Jonathan was born in 1987. Denise is a Speech Pathologist / Therapist. Beginning in 1993, Pastor Ed experienced a call to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. By the fall of 1996, his family moved from San Diego to Saskatoon Saskatchewan, so that Ed could attend Lutheran Theological Seminary. While at Seminary, Pastor Ed served a one year internship in a vacant three point parish in Saskatchewan and completed a rotation as intern chaplain at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg. He earned a Master’s of Divinity Degree and graduated from Seminary with academic distinction in May of 2000.
His wife Denise continues to practice speech therapy. She directs our traditional choir known as the Grace Choir, sings in our Praise Choir and is part of a quartet made up of women from our congregation known as “Kismet.” Their son Jonathan is currently studying at the School of Pharmacy at the University of British Columbia.
Leah Green
Leah Green Leah Green is the director of our youth ministry program and the manager and director of our Bright Beginnings After School Care program. She was born in 1955 in Stratford Ontario. Leah grew up on the family farm, which was located in a farming community near Stratford. Leah and her family were actively involved in church life during her youth. She graduated from high school in 1973. Following high school, she enrolled at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.
She graduated in 1978 with a certificate in Behavioral Science and Social Service Work. Following graduation, she worked as a counselor for the elderly. In addition, she worked with mentally and physically challenged adults and children in various capacities. She also worked as part of a team in a child rehabilitation ward, in a hospital located in Owen Sound, Ontario. She met and married her husband Harvey in 1983 in Chatham Ontario. Their son Jonathan was born in 1985. They moved to BC in 1987. Their daughter Alexandra was born in 1988. While living in the Kelowna area, Leah worked for The Society for Community Living. Her job entailed working with mentally challenged adults in residential and in employment settings. She also worked for School District 23 for 10 years as a Certified Educational Assistant (CEA). Leah also works in a supportive role with her husband Harvey in the family business (precision machine shop). Leah has been a member of Grace Lutheran Church for 16 years. She has served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, church council member, choir member, member of our Kismet quartet, coordinator, teacher and music leader for our annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Grace Lutheran and our remote VBS in the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Leah’s son Jonathan is an experienced and certified deep-sea diver. Jonathan is currently enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, infantry division. Her daughter Alexandra is currently pursuing a degree in science at the Okanagan College in Kelowna. |
